AP had this brilliant idea to get up at sunrise, do a little half mile hike at some place I had never heard of before called "The Narrows" and watch as the sun came up over the Harpeth River.

It sounded great except for the 5am wake-up call.

Located about 30 minutes from Nashville, it's not a far drive. And the drive itself is really pretty and scenic.

And then you'll see some signs for Harpeth River State Park and "The Narrows" so you'll wind through streets to a small parking area. You'll have to walk back the way you just came to the trail (where the street divides, go to the left), and take a left.

You don't go very far when you see the stairs that lead up to the view. They're embedded in the dirt. It looks easy. And then as you're panting and climbing up, you realize that it's more difficult than you thought.

And watch out for the spiderwebs. It feels like you're constantly walking into them and you probably look a little bit crazy swatting at things that only you can feel, and can't even see. Oh and mosquitoes. Maybe put some bug spray on. You're in nature. They exist too.

It's only a 1/3 of a mile to the overlook. You'll know it when you get to it.

But in case you don't, and these pictures just don't do it any justice, I'll describe it as best I can: It includes rocks, but more significantly a large rock that seems to have been laid there by some person so you could sit and meditate, or chat and take in the scenery, or just take super cool looking photos on said rock because of it's shape, how flat it is, and how it protrudes out just enough to make you feel a little dangerous for getting close to the edge.

If you go a little further on the path, past that rock, you can climb up some more rocks which lends itself to another incredible viewpoint with the protruding rock included. In any rock view you choose, you'll get a good lookout.

The lookout includes the Harpeth River way below, and you could see it stretch out in both directions (visibility pending), there's also a large grass area and hills of trees. It's beautiful.

The first time I went with AP and two of my roommates — Annemarie and Janna — with this whole sunrise thing, it was foggy. Like creepy foggy to the point where we couldn't see anything below us. At the point we left, we could almost see the river and a large ball of light was just shining through a bit. But it almost looked like you could step off onto the fog it was so thick.

The second time I went with my friend Noelle was not for the sunrise. Still early — about 8:30am — but much brighter. No fog. And we watched as some kayakers took their place in the river below. There was still as many spider web scares. The surroundings though distracted me from the three mosquito bites I got and Noelle and I just sat and took everything in. We even made friends with a butterfly that didn't fly away from us.

I feel like this is a place I'll go back to often.

Bonus: It's really close to Loveless Cafe. So you can go there for breakfast after!
