Five Brands I Love

For a get-to-know-you-better class assignment, I’m choosing five brands that represent me best/are a part of who I am. I figured the best place to put a get-to-know-you assignment is on a blog that I’ve kept going for three and a half years.

So here goes.

For starters, my name is Maddie. And I love sunflowers, so this picture and my expression is completely accurate. If sunflowers were a brand, that would be one of my five.

The actual five are as follows (from my #5 to my #1):

apple

Apple

Apple is about innovation. I love to innovate, so this resonates with me. Plus, as far as devices that I’ve used consistently and frequently over the past ten years — it would be Apple. My phone has everything I never knew I needed. And that’s what is so great about Apple — they give you products that you didn’t know you needed. I remember in high school thinking, “I don’t need an iPhone. I don’t even want it. I just want to be able to call and text people.” But once I got one, I found so many different uses for it. I love it.

adobe

Adobe

Adobe enables me to create. I’ve used Adobe products for over ten years, starting with journalism in high school as a newspaper editor designing and managing page content. As a full-time graphic designer for the last five years, the Adobe Suite has allowed me to explore, grow and learn all the different ways to visually communicate with someone. I feel that in addition to being a creator, I believe everyone has the power to create as well.

When I was thinking about brands, I knew Sugar Camp Farm had to be one of them. I came to Sugar Camp Farm at a pivotal point in my life. Although I was only working there for three weeks, I made relationships and memories that will last me a life-time. Not to mention, it was my first introduction to living my dream out in Tennessee. It helped me to learn more about food (which I love) and that greens have different tastes to them. It made me appreciate what’s most important in life. I love that the farmers Lizzie and Jesse created this farm with little background in farming and have made it successful. Their visual brand is significant to me as well since I worked with Lizzie to create the logo, and the five ducks on their farm inspired me to name my design company Five Ducks Design.

nutella

Nutella

Who doesn’t like Nutella? When I studied abroad in Italy, I bought Nutella and used it on my sandwiches at first, then I started to put it on everything I could think of including carrots, before i was finally just spooning it straight out of the jar. I grew up thinking I was 25% Italian until I took an Ancestry DNA test and found out I’m less than 5%. I’ve decided that I’m still 25% culturally Italian (my grandma and mom were born there) so Nutella represents my love of chocolate and Italy as well as my Italian heritage.

church of jesus christ of latter-day saints

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Most importantly, I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As I talked about in a previous post, I just celebrated my baptism anniversary — I was baptized on August 28, 2011, seven years ago. The Church as a brand is incredible. I remember thinking that when I was investigating. Everything is well-designed, very thorough and thought out. There’s also a huge emphasis put on transparency, integrity, trust, awareness and love as exemplified by the Savior. I hope as I continue my journey I can embody and exemplify the values the church teaches.

There you have it! If you had to pick five brands to represent you/a part of who you are, what would they be?
